    Restrictions: R18

Ticket Information: Cost: $100.00. Reserve now by phoning Muse on Allen, 04-384-1181 or buy tickets now.

    Website: Vintaggio Wine

    Background

Muse on Allen Executive Chef, Samuel North

Vintaggio is teaming up with Muse on Allen to bring you an exciting series, Dinner with the Winemakers.  Award-winning Executive Chef, Samuel North, will be creating outstanding menus to pair with wines made by some of New Zealand's best winemakers.

Not only will you enjoy the sensory pleasures of the evening, but you will meet the winemakers and learn from them about their terroir, grape varieties, vineyard and cellar practices, and vintage characteristics that combine to make these wonderful wines.

The Chef, too, will comment on each dish, its ingredients and their origins, and special preparation techniques. Vintaggio's Sommelier, and any keen diners, will contribute to the discussion.  Seating will be communal, so come alone, in pairs, or even as a larger group -- but reservations are limited, so book early.

Winemaker: Strat Canning of Margrain Vineyard, Martinborough

    Margrain Vineyard Winemaker, Strat Canning

Strat Canning is a quietly confident winemaker, totally absorbed with the evolution of flavour and structure from vine to wine. Pinot Noir is his particular passion.

However, at Margrain he also produces a range of wonderful white wines, with Riesling as the variety that Strat -- and many of his fans -- holds most dear.

All who know it marvel at the succulent fruit flavours and punchiness of texture and acidity that can be achieved here with this often underrated variety.

Since 1996, Strat has worked closely with the Margrain owners and a small but passionate team, to ensure there is no barrier between vineyard and winery efforts. He also planted vines on his small block in the township and has produced his own wines for many years.

Strat will convey to us a fascinating understanding of the complexities of the region and the art, science, and serendipity of vine-growing and winemaking that combine to deliver the magic in the glass.

Samuel will describe the dishes prepared as the perfect pairs for these wines.

And you, the diners, will enjoy the sensory and intellectual experience.

Indeed, as Robbie was well aware, the best laid plans often go astray and they have gone astray again for us this month. Unfortunately, because of changes at Auburn, they are unable to attend. Other options have been pursued but we have been unable to get a suitable replacement.

Presenter: Christine Kernohan - Chef winemaker, Gladstone Vineyard

    gladstone_vineyardBackground:

Christine is chief winemaker at Gladstone, involved in all stages of winemaking and manages the business. One of only three Scottish women winemakers in the world (it not being a common career aspiration where or when she grew up). Christine 'fell' into the wine industry after a happenstance visit to Gladstone Vineyard with David one spring weekend in 1995.

She previously worked in the computer industry in business analysis and project management, and was also involved in social research and agriculture industry research. She has an MBA from Massey University and farming experience from involvement in a goat, sheep and beef farm at Hunterville.

Gladstone Vineyard was the opportunity to run her own business, bring together the rural life with business, and apply her scientific bent from way back.

David Kernohan is owner/taster, architect and former Associate Professor at the School of Architecture at Wellington's Victoria University. He has been operating his own research and building heritage consultancy, Architecture Diagnostics, from the vineyard for the past eight years.

He is author of five books on architecture including Wairarapa Buildings published in 2003. David is a Deputy Environment Commissioner, was co-author of the Hunn Report on the weathertightness of buildings that precipitated the Building Act 2004, and is a former Director of Wellington Waterfront Limited.

    About Man O' War

The Winemaker at Man O’ War is Duncan McTavish. His heart and soul and enormous talent are all reflected in each of the extraordinary wines he crafts at Man O’ War. Of singular personality, they are indeed the “definitive translation of our land.”

The inaugural graduate of the Viticulture & Oenology degree at Lincoln University in 1998, Duncan spent the following three years working harvest for some of the best producers in Burgundy,
Germany, California, Australia and New Zealand. This apprenticeship culminated in 2001 when he landed a job with one of New Zealand’s best wine producers, the Waipara Valley’s inimitable
Pegasus Bay. After nearly four years under the wing of Pegasus, Duncan left to develop his own winemaking ideas at Waipara Springs. In 2008, Man O’ War were fortunate enough to entice
Duncan to go north to Man O’ War. He now makes his home on Waiheke living above Onetangi Beach with his partner Vanessa, son Tommy and a baby daughter.

We look forward to sharing the Man O’ War philosophy and wines with Ben who is the Global Sales Manager for the winery. The line-up will be as follows:

    • 2013 Gravestone Sauvignon Blanc Semillon
    • 2014 Valhalla Chardonnay
