In 2006, a group of locals were subdividing a large area of farmland for housing when they discovered the boulders and river gravel that had been laid down by the Ōhau River when it was a much larger, glacial river.

Experts found that the river terrace soils could be likened to some of the better vineyard sites in Marlborough. The area also has a unique microclimate with minimal frosts and long, dry autumns with cool nights, ideal for the slow flavour development during the ripening of the fruit.

The recommendation was ‘fewer houses, more vines!’, and Ōhau Wines was born. In November 2006, 10 hectares of pinot gris and pinot noir vines were planted. Over time, another 25 hectares were planted. Our vineyard is proudly owned by New Zealanders and managed by a team of permanent staff and casual workers from the local area.

Members will be aware of the lowering of drink/drive limits from December 2014. If you are unsure, refer to the Land Transport Act 1998. We ask members to be conscious of these limits. For those driving, water and some food are provided. Alternatively, consider designating a driver, using a taxi, Uber, or dial-a-driver to ensure a safe ride home.
