    Background

Muse on Allen Executive Chef, Samuel North

Vintaggio is teaming up with Muse on Allen to bring you an exciting series, Dinner with the Winemakers.  Award-winning Executive Chef, Samuel North, will be creating outstanding menus to pair with wines made by some of New Zealand’s best winemakers.

Not only will you enjoy the sensory pleasures of the evening, but you will meet the winemakers and learn from them about their terroir, grape varieties, vineyard and cellar practices, and vintage characteristics that combine to make these wonderful wines.

The Chef, too, will comment on each dish, its ingredients and their origins, and special preparation techniques. Vintaggio’s Sommelier, and any keen diners, will contribute to the discussion.  Seating will be communal, so come alone, in pairs, or even as a larger group — but reservations are limited, so book early.

Winemaker: Strat Canning of Margrain Vineyard, Martinborough

    Margrain Vineyard Winemaker, Strat Canning

Strat Canning is a quietly confident winemaker, totally absorbed with the evolution of flavour and structure from vine to wine. Pinot Noir is his particular passion.

However, at Margrain he also produces a range of wonderful white wines, with Riesling as the variety that Strat — and many of his fans — holds most dear.

All who know it marvel at the succulent fruit flavours and punchiness of texture and acidity that can be achieved here with this often underrated variety.

Since 1996, Strat has worked closely with the Margrain owners and a small but passionate team, to ensure there is no barrier between vineyard and winery efforts. He also planted vines on his small block in the township and has produced his own wines for many years.

Strat will convey to us a fascinating understanding of the complexities of the region and the art, science, and serendipity of vine-growing and winemaking that combine to deliver the magic in the glass.

Samuel will describe the dishes prepared as the perfect pairs for these wines.

And you, the diners, will enjoy the sensory and intellectual experience.
